Paper GIS: A first- and third-world solution
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Sanet Eksteen, Erika Pretorius

Arguably the biggest challenge in GIS education in South Africa is the availability of computers in the schooling system and the concomitant level of computer literacy. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate that under certain pressing circumstances it is necessary to elucidate the basic concepts of a GIS to scholars using manual rather than digital methods. The idea is that the scholars should learn the concepts of GIS in an environment in which they are accustomed to without getting 'lost' in the software and hardware. It is often emphasised in GIS textbooks that it is not only about software and hardware (although they are important components of a GIS) but about the process that you follow when doing a GIS project.
