Abstract Demographic Trends in an Urban-Suburban Colorado School District Track: GIS for Administration, Planning and Policy Author(s): Joshua Hensley, Jaclyn Gorman Aurora Public Schools (APS) is located just east of the city of Denver. With an enrollment of 32,000, APS is the sixth largest school district in Colorado. Over the past 10 years the district has experienced dramatic shifts in the demographics of the students served. In order to plan for the future needs of students, and to increase student achievement, APS must have a comprehensive understanding of the community. This presentation details the enrollment and demographic profile of the district's 46 K-12 schools. GIS was used extensively to analyze enrollment patterns and to derive a spatial dataset. Techniques used during this study included geocoding student data, the kernel density toolset under the spatial analyst extension, spatial statistics and spatial joins.
