GIS Experiences for Mayor's Youth Technology Corps - MYTC- Detroit
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Yichun Xie, Randy Raymond

Participants in this session will learn about the MYTC-Detroit project, "Creating Safe Communities through Information Technology Training in Homeland Security Applications." MYTC-Detroit is a project funded by NSF ITEST Program to support a three-year collaborative project between Eastern Michigan University, the Detroit Public Schools, the City of Detroit Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the Environmental System Research Institute, Inc (Esri). MYTC-Detroit will provide two cohorts of 100 high school students in Detroit with training and hands-on practice through a variety of GIS/T and IT applications, such as, designing evacuation routes for critical buildings, information security, and computer forensics. This presentation will illustrate the design, the infrastructure, and several toolsets for real-time online data entry, emergency response planning, and 3D route analysis for making evacuation decisions in critical buildings. Moreover, it will also highlight pedagogical benefits of learning STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) through this application module.
