Spatial Information System (SIS) Program in Arkansas
Track: Supporting a GIS Program
Author(s): Robert Weih

The Spatial Information Systems program at the University of Arkansas at Monticello School of Forest Resources creates a spatial learning environment that allows students to investigate, analyze, question, and make decisions in an interactive holistic manner. The graduates meet the growing demand for a 21st Century geospatial workforce. The Spatial Information Systems program leads to a BS in SIS with surveying or GIS option or an Associate of Science in Land Surveying Technology. The curriculum incorporates GIS, GPS, Surveying, and remote sensing technology as well as critical general education requirements. The program started to offer classes in 1999.

Learn the history and the political up/downs of getting the SIS Program funded and started. Also, how the faculty balances training and education in a geospatial program, while empathizing good communication skills. We use a problem base learning approach and all students are required to meet certain core competencies to be successful.
