Geospatial Technologies in 2-year and 4-year Non-traditional Geospatial College Classes
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Amy Work

With an increasing demand in the workforce for individuals with geospatial capabilities, colleges and universities are finding themselves at the forefront for producing geospatially knowledgeable individuals. Four institutions from New York State, including both community colleges and four-year institutions, engaged faculty from a variety of disciplines across their campuses to develop geospatial modules as part of their curriculum. The main objective was to incorporate geospatial technologies and tools into courses that in the past have not had geospatial components. Each institution has identified faculty to develop the modules, and implement the technologies into previously existing courses, by emphasizing the use of the technologies specific to topics covered in the selected course. The modules address a range of issues, but focus primarily on topics related to Homeland Security/Emergency Management and Natural Resource Management/Monitoring. This presentation will look at the development and implementation of modules into the classrooms.
