Introduction and Evaluation of GIS-based, Interactive Learning Tool for Classroom
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Georgianna Strode

Using GIS in the classroom holds promise as an interactive learning tool and for promoting spatial thinking skills. However, educators cite technological difficulties as an obstacle. Because new technology introduces a 'learning curve' requiring strong commitment from users, it is prudent to first evaluate a technology's receptivity before promoting the technology. This survey introduces and evaluates a new, simplified GIS-based learning tool specifically designed for the classroom. The study differs from others by focusing on educators' satisfaction with the final classroom product, rather than on educators' mastery of technology.

Each case study evaluates teacher and student satisfaction with the learning tool. The case study maps were introduced in primary, secondary, and higher education; and subjects crossed disciplines including history, cultural geography, social studies and civics. This session introduces the mapping tool and presents teacher survey results, concluding with suggestions for ways educators can incorporate GIS technology into future classroom use.
