Connecting Time and Space: Teaching History with GIS
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Christine Esposito, Christopher Shedd, Chris Bunin, Tamra Campbell, Donna Shifflett

Using GIS to help recognize patterns and relationships between people, space, and time was the 2007-2008 skill focus for the "The Virginia Experiment" TAH Grant. Through a collegial and experiential approach, teachers from 5 school divisions conducted authentic research and data creation to develop GIS expeditions for K-12 history instruction. Teachers involved in this innovative project will discuss the accomplishments and professional challenges they faced while integrating GIS and spatial thinking into their standards-based American history curriculum. In addition to sharing best practice lesson plans and modules, the panel will discuss implementation, troubleshooting, and replication strategies. Topics will include the Constitutional Convention, Civil War, Westward Expansion, Underground Railroad, and Civil Rights. Lesson plans and GIS data will be provided.
