Teaching Cartography Through Distance Learning

The Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at the United States Military Academy has developed a web-based cartography course that incorporates Esri software and resources into the curriculum. The course is used to provide cadets participating in a semester study abroad program a virtual means to receive instruction on basic cartographic principles. Additionally, it will be developed as an outreach project designed to provide members of the Department of Defense a distance learning method to study cartographic design. The course combines resources available from the Esri Enterprise site license currently used by USMA, existing curriculum and advanced web-based technology to introduce students to different cartographic principles and techniques.
