Abstract National community giving with GIS in less than 60 days Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author(s): Joan Leder A great idea came to a great man. George Martin on a Journey for 9/11 is walking across America, more than 3,200 miles, to raise awareness and ten million dollars for the healthcare costs of rescue workers suffering from their heroic acts at Ground Zero in Manhattan. This GIS project includes resources from Fairleigh Dickinson University and Esri in developing a plan, creating a route, and displaying an interactive online map for sponsors through ArcWeb Services. Planning a community outreach program incorporates identification of feasible resources, strengths and weaknesses of those resources, and allocating those resources within a timely and effective manner. The July 23 request for GIS went live September 16, 2007. This presentation will show how GIS can cultivate a national fundraising effort and the lessons learned while building and implementing the project with donated resources within a limited timeframe.
