Abstract Incorporating GIT into Social Studies Lessons Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author(s): Carol Johnson I have used GIT in my Global Issues class-we have mapped the countries of the world that participate in 21st Century slavery. We start with a base map of each continent and color code the countries by percentages and types of slavery found within that country. We have mapped the useage of child soldiers in the world, using base maps of the continents, then types of child soldiering. I have taught a GIT class for the past three years and used the book Mapping Our World. Students have created a variety of projects using GIT-One example was mapping the Oneida Reservation and placing the businesses, housing developements, wetlands and other points of interest on the map along with hyperlinks of pictures of that place, plus information about that point. Students have mapped the five school districts the reservation covers and the numbers of native students in each school vs. tribal.
