Incorporating GIS into the K-12 curriculum for disaster preparedness research
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Tom Chandler, Heejung An

Although issues pertaining to disaster preparedness play a fundamental role in shaping public policy and academic research in both the US and overseas, such topics are given little attention in the American K-12 curriculum. Usage of ArcGIS has the potential to add value in this area of study, by enabling students to better visualize, research, and subsequently prepare for mega-disasters. This presentation will discuss various K-12 initiatives in which ArcGIS is being used for such purposes. Topics covered will relate to social studies and science education.
