Track: GIS for Administration, Planning and Policy
Author(s): Trevor Mahlum

School grade level configurations vary dramatically by community preference. Issues often arise around effective instructional and social settings for sixth and ninth grade students. A district case study is presented detailing the choices students of subgroups made about moving to a new grade level configuration. In an open enrollment district, the community desire to evolve from a Kindergarten-sixth elementary and seventh through ninth junior high model to a K-5, 6-8 & 9-12 system, opened many choices in school enrollment to all students in the fall of 2005. The subgroup membership of sixth and ninth grade students exhibited effect on the choice of grade level setting differently from the general population.

Using GIS visualizations, this paper will detail the relationship between student school selection and subgroup membership. The paper will also display the trend over three years for student site selection associated with subgroup membership.
