Fire Hydrants More Accessible in Rural Arizona due to Youth Community Mapping
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships

In rural southeastern Arizona, small communities like Clifton have only heard of GIS. 4-H Community Readiness Assessment team learned the Clifton Fire Department did not have a current map of fire hydrants. Using newly learned GPS/GIS mapping skills, a team of six 4-H youth interested in helping their community, volunteered to work with the Fire Department to modernize this critical information. Youth trouped throughout Clifton using GPS units to mark fire hydrant locations. Youth created a GIS map and database that provides street locations and distances between adjacent fire hydrants, making their community safer during a fire emergency. The youth then taught the firemen to use GPS units. This dynamic youth community mapping project is providing opportunities for youth to play a creative role in improving their community.
