Abstract 4-Her's and GIS: Building a Stronger Tomorrow Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author(s): Megan Caudill, Nathan West The Wilkes County 4-H program with generous funding from the Esri Corporation was able to conduct a hands-on learning experience that engaged twelve middle school students to explore their community's waterways through GIS Technology. The project consisted of the students visiting local waterways to measure pollution levels using the insect populations that were found. Once all data was gathered students recorded their locations with their GIS units and once back in the lab they then took the points recorded as well as their research and created layered maps to demonstrate their findings. The findings then were presented to community leaders and members to create awareness about water quality in the area waterways.
