Barriers for sustainable GIS education in the Netherlands
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Marinus Bakker

Two internet questionnaires were made in order to research the possible barriers in developing and maintaining sustainable GIS education. Sustainable GIS education is defined as developing education and training for a longer period, with good financial backing (e.g. number of students), knowledgeable and experienced lecturers, support of management (organization and IT)and the access to user friendly (lecturers and students) software and relevant local data.

Results of the questionnaires indicate the difficulties in the dutch GIS education (e.g. low number of students and the lack of support by the management). The results indicate solutions aimed at a higher level of coordination and cooperation between educational institutes and GIS professionals and a more specific definition what is needed for the users of GIS education and training. Some examples related to the Body of GIS Science and Technology Knowledge will also be discussed.
