Track: Supporting a GIS Program
Author(s): John Johnson

Can the Body of Knowledge be used along with DACUM for Community College GIS curriculum development? After successfully using "DACUM" to identify the basic knowledge and skills required of an entry level GIS technician, San Diego Mesa College has attempted to map these competencies to learning objectives included in the newly released UCGIS Body of Knowledge. The goal is to develop a standardized curriculum for workforce training which is compatible and even recognized by four-year degree programs. DACUM, an acronym for 'Developing A CUrriculuM', involved using a panel of expert workers to identify the core duties and tasks of a GIS Technician. The Body of Knowledge seeks to clarify and define the parameters of the field of Geographic Information Science & Technology. This Advance Technology Education project is funded by the National Science Foundation.
