NCSU Libraries' Online Directory of Local Government GIS Data
Track: Using GIS in Libraries and Museums
Author(s): Matthew Sumner, Jefferson Essic

For many years, NCSU Libraries has maintained a directory of local data holdings and links to county and municipal government GIS data resources within North Carolina, including mapping sites, download locations, and WMS links ( http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/gis/counties.html ). This directory is extremely popular and has become a valuable online data discovery and collaborative tool for GIS users especially within the state, but also worldwide. Through our partnership with the Library of Congress' National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), the directory has recently been enhanced by expanding our listings of data holdings, improving download access to NCSU affiliates, and allowing easier maintenance. Since we have been collecting locally produced data for over a decade, developing a simple and efficient means for cataloging, searching, and accessing our diverse data collections has been very useful.
