Abstract Integrating Framework Data Concepts into Geographic Information Science Higher Education Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author(s): Jeffrey Hamerlinck, Steven Prager, Shawn Lanning This paper presents strategies for integrating framework data concepts with geographic information science (GIScience) curricula in higher education. Framework data refers to those geospatial data themes identified as the foundation upon which all other data layers are structured and integrated for a specific analysis or geographic domain. The framework concept represents the base data elements of a spatial data infrastructure (SDI). In addition to content specifications for framework data themes, framework also addresses mechanisms for defining, maintaining, sharing, and accessing framework data. As background, the inclusion of framework and other SDI concepts within the Geographic Information Science and Technology Body of Knowledge (BoK) will be reviewed, followed by a consideration of such pedagogical factors as course types, framework sub-topics, student-centered learning designs, and differences in education versus training approaches in GIScience teaching. Three integration examples will be presented, focused on desired learning outcomes for different end-user groups.
