Project EAST: Maui Police Department 911 - Surf's Up!
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Isla Young, Leslie Wilkins

Surfs Up! Project EAST, a service learning technology lab course continues to foster growth by encouraging and developing community partnerships to provide hands on learning opportunities.

EAST students were given the opportunity to visit the 911 center. Students were tasked with creating a GIS map of all surf spots/beaches on the Island of Maui. During times of emergency, response time is critical to saving lives. With the new GIS map, 911emergency dispatchers immediately see a location on their GIS map. This information enables the dispatcher to send the nearest responder to provide immediate help.

This project provided the opportunity for county professionals to work directly with high school students to successfully elevate emergency services for our community and gave students the platform to use this technology in a compelling real world context. This paper will profile how this model was built and will lay the framework for future county/student collaborations.
