GIS and 4H - Community Service, Fun, and Partnerships
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships

The El Dorado County 4H Youth Commission has utilized GIS and GPS technology in a variety of ways. Our group embarked on our GIS journey through an Esri Grant allowing us access to the ArcMap suite of products. As part of the grant we completed a Community Atlas project and published it to the Web. We were able to acquire GPS units through a workforce preparation partnership. The new equipment paired with ArcMap software has allowed us to expand our opportunities for education and partnerships. Projects that we are now working on are mapping "Safe places" for youth and pairing with local fire safe councils to map fire hydrants. We are so excited about this technology that we started a second community atlas project. This project will produce a map, for distribution, of historic sites in our county that are reportedly "Haunted".
