Creating a Community College GIS Program Support Network
Track: Supporting a GIS Program
Author(s): Ann Johnson, Richard Della Valle, Christine Lewis

In 1997 a small grant through the California Community College Chancellor's office helped provide training to more than 125 college faculty in California. From that initiative, a network evolved called the California Community College GIS Network (C3GIS.Net). Many of those faculty continued on to create GIS programs. This successful project continued for a time, but lack of funding left instructors at institutions across California without a good support system. In 2008 the Chancellor's office again funded a C3GIS.Net project to help colleges develop, sustain and expand their GIS programs. Based on the outcomes of an NSF Envisioning Grant to Monterey Pennisula College to create a GIS Center of Excellence, this presentation will explain the outcome from the NSF Grant and the goals for C3GIS.Net. We will also discuss how colleges across the country may be able to join a network for a National Geospatial Technology Center imitative.
