AbstractGeospatial Semester: Connecting High School and College with GIS Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools Author(s): Bob Kolvoord, Kathryn Keranen The Geospatial Semester is a unique partnership between James Madison University and more than a dozen school districts in Virginia to provide opportunities for high school students to learn about GIS and engage in GIS-based local project work all while earning college credit. In its 4th year, the Geospatial Semester has brought GIS to hundreds of students and engaged them in the kind of extended, detailed project work that is so elusive in the current high-stakes testing regime, but which is so useful as these students transition to college or to work. In this session, we'll talk about the project, highlight ways in which it can transfer to other states and hear from teachers who've participated in this work over the last few years.
