Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Ben Butler

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is working with the Pittsburgh, PA Mayor’s office to identify and target areas for green development and sustainability projects. Interns volunteering with the SCA are utilizing GIS and GPS technologies to track recent progress in the greening of the city of Pittsburgh. This project leverages the power of spatial thinking to display, identify, and prioritize areas for new sustainable development projects. The project team works with individual homeowners and business owners to educate and inform them about the benefits of becoming sustainable in their lives. The project also highlights accessibility of data in that it leverages ArcGIS Server to display the areas where conservation work is being completed and where further work is required. From monitoring air quality to mapping tree plantings, this project focuses on the grassroots efforts that are taking place in the community.
