Abstract

Spatial Visualization and Analysis with GIS in High School Geography
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Andy Milson, Mary Curtis

There is a role for both spatial visualization technologies such as Internet-based GIS and spatial analysis technologies such as desktop-GIS in the high school geography classroom, but each technology should be used in a way that matches its intended purpose. In this presentation, I will summarize my research on the use of geospatial technologies for spatial visualization and analysis with high school geography students. This research involves case studies of high school geography classrooms in which I have analyzed the affordances of Internet-based GIS, such as Globalis, and desktop GIS, such as ArcView and MyWorld as tools for geographic learning.
