Improving Communities through 4-H Geospatial Projects
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Jeff Sallee

The Oklahoma 4-H program has spent the last five years exploring and developing youth projects using geospatial technology. Our teams of youth and adults have successfully improved their communities through the application of GIS. We have helped communities prepare for potential disaster by identifying and locating storm shelters, storm sirens, and emergency phones. Our teams have explored community history through researching and locating century old buildings, centennial trees, and ghost towns. They have also enhanced communities through locating storm drains, walking trails and recreational facilities. Every place we map, we map with the community in mind. Our program involves youth, adults, and industry. Come learn about our successes, our challenges, and the development of our geospatial program.
