GIS in Education: Breaking All the Rules?
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Bob Coulter

This presentation draws on research done in the NSF-sponsored LIONS (Local Investigations of Natural Science) project to consider the challenges and opportunities involved in using GIS in schools. More specifically, it considers the premise that under the rules of the school game as it is usually played, teachers cannot successfully implement GIS in a meaningful manner. Instead, taking advantage of GIS requires that teachers and students break the rules through creative subterfuge.

Current LIONS research data suggests the general characteristics of these rule-breakers. How can we support them, and encourage more scofflaws in the teaching ranks?
