Gearing Up for GIS in Middle School Science
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Linda Peterson

Fairfax County Public Schools is using a systemic approach to infuse the use of GIS into middle school science classrooms. This session will focus on how we have integrated this technology into our existing standards-based curriculum. Keys to our success include building interest and confidence through frequent communications to teachers, training to build background knowledge and skills, creating and modeling well-developed inquiry-based lessons, implementing a technology plan to support the installation of ArcView and timely acquisition of data layers. Our experience has shown that the use of this tool is very compatible with a standards-based curriculum model. Its use has captured the attention and interest of students and teachers alike as they explore the many meaningful applications of this technology to their world.
