Author(s): Quinta Perez Sierra, Stafany Hernández, Luis Joyanes

In the Geographic Information System (GIS) school of Las Americas Technological Institute (ITLA), we consider environmental education as the cornerstone to fulfill sustainable development in the Dominican Republic and our main goal is to make students conscious of the environmental protection.

In the Dominican Republic we suffer global environmental problems: disforestation, disasters, lost of biological diversity, soil degradation, climate changes, thinning of the ozone layer, contamination, lack of water resources and population growth; we pretend to attack from the beginning those problems, teaching ArcGIS tools in schools.

Based on the written before, we also made-up to bring GIS technology to support teaching-learning process giving special emphasis in the elementary curriculum, in biology and preservation of natural resources; focusing in a special study case based on the zone of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, that will measure the social impact in different environments. We pretend expose how the project will be implemented.
