AbstractGIT Ahead: Integrating GIS into Secondary School Science Curricula Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education Author(s): Karen Edelstein The GIT Ahead Project works with middle- and high school teachers as they integrate geospatial technologies into their science curricula, which range from 6th grade general science, high school earth science, and living environment, through Advanced Placement biology. Now completing the third year of funding, GIT Ahead has worked with 54 teachers from across a 17-county region of New York State. Teachers are trained in use of Google Earth, AEJEE, and ArcGIS, and combine these programs to create lesson plans that suit both their curricular needs and the abilities of their students. Lessons focus on local and regional environmental issues, and utilize diverse datasets that are available through a variety of GIT Ahead’s online web interfaces. GIT Ahead participants will present how they successfully incorporated geospatial technologies into their teaching and describe the challenges and opportunities they experienced.
