ModelBuilder as a Pedagogical Tool.
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Jonas Bohlin

At Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the students in the master of forestry program have two GIS courses. In the second and more advanced course, held at their 7: th semester, the students do advanced GIS analyses on real world problems. The students do their own projects and have to plan their work well. The projects can be building a tool for finding areas suitable for new forest roads or modeling reindeer habitat using GPS positions from gps-collars. Model Builder is used as the main tool for the students to use, because it gives a great over view of the workflow of the tool they are building as well as a good documentation of what has been done. And as a final twist students can publish their models/tool on an ArcGIS server.
