Project Community Involvement with GIS: Making a Difference!
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Teresa Dossman

Carl Wunsche Sr. HS Career Academy is making a difference in the lives of citizens who live in the Spring, Texas area. After meeting with the Renaissance 1960 Improvement Committee, educators discovered a valuable use for student GIS skills. Project Community Involvement (PCI) began in November 2007 with additional GIS training provided by a team of Exxon Mobile Geoscientists. With the GIS professionals on the team, students gathered data on the Renaissance 1960 Model Block for areas such traffic flow, lighting, irrigation, drainage, and security.

Using GIS maps, students make recommendations to decrease the crime rate, improve appearance and reduce environmental issues including flooding, overgrowth of vegetation and traffic jams. The PCI group has been rewarded for their GIS skills and the community improvement. The Northwest Chamber of Commerce awarded the group an official legislative proclamation for community service work. PCI's goal is to improve the community's quality of life.
