Abstract

Using a Web-Based GIS to Teach Problem-Based Science
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Karen Lenkeit Meezan, Cindy Schmidt, Richard Taketa

Foothill Community College has partnered with San Jose State University to bring GIS technology to the high school and college classroom. The project consists of two parts. In the first part, Foothill and San Jose State have teamed up to offer classes on building and maintaining Web based Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The courses articulate between the Foothill GIS Certificate program and San Jose State.

In the second part of the project, high school students use the web GIS built by the college class for problem based learning activities that tie in with state and national standards. The students in the college class have built the web GIS using scientific data related to the San Francisco/San Joaquin Delta region, with a focus on watersheds, biodiversity and earthquake hazards. The project is funded by a grant from the NSF Advanced Technology Education program.
