Learning Local History by Mapping Veteran Gravesites
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Mary Peck

This project involved 4-H youth, 4-H volunteers, extension educators, museum director, sextons and the public. Youth used the most current records to locate gravesites of veteran of wars buried in area cemeteries. They mapped the main aspects of the cemetery and then took points for each veteran. Digital photos of the grave stones were also taken. The youth read each headstone and updated the written records for the cemetery sextons. The youth learned from our local museum director about all the different wars in which our citizens had fought. The youth also were amazed at the history that could be found in a cemetery. The youth used handheld GPS units with which to collect data. They then created the maps using computer software. The maps of the veterans’ graves will be available to the public and civic organizations to assist in efforts to honor our area veterans of war.
