Abstract

Earth, Wind and Fire: Language Arts Collides with Geography
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Barbaree Duke, Shannon White

Engaging students effectively with curriculum that meets the reading needs of NCLB and high-stakes testing is today's challenge in K-12 education. With GIS as your compass, come explore the essential connection between English Language Arts and Geography. Connecting students with the text they read will increase student engagement and foster opportunities to model good analysis and thinking skills. We'll discuss methodology, resources and offer elementary, middle and high school reading examples that all are enhanced with the power of one GIS project highlighting an earth, wind and fire thematic approach that's ready-to-use.
