Making Connections with Community Mapping—Escambia County 4-H Leadership Team
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Latessa Estes, Charlie Gonzalez

The Leadership Club’s adventure started with the Alert, Evacuation, and Shelter Training. With the Esri grant, The Florida 4-H Foundation grant, and making connections with local officials, the adventure was well on its way.

The Leadership Club has presented GIS to thousands and proven that youth, communities, county officials, and government can work together to better our world and our future. The Leadership Club made connections while mapping fire hydrants, holding lock-ins, giving workshops, participating in Teen Cert, helping emergency management, and hosting a map contest. Also, using the process of puppets, we are able to introduce GIS/GPS in a fun engaging method to younger children. Knowledge about the community is the start of community mapping projects and that knowledge comes from relationships. We are proud of the new cooperative interagency programs that this organization is developing and, we are looking forward to further implementation during the coming months.
