DACUM Curriculum Analysis for GIS Technicians
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): John Johnson

DACUM, an acronym for 'Developing A CUrriculuM', is a popular occupational analysis technique which involves using a panel of expert workers to identify exactly what people do on the job and how they do it. This information is summarized in a DACUM chart which provides a graphic profile of the duties and tasks required of workers in a particular job or occupation. Since it is created by direct industry input, a DACUM chart is particularly well suited to form the basis for a competency-based or performance-based training program. DACUM has been used repeatedly to analyze geospatial occupations in order to develop or evaluate new education/training programs, update curriculum and identify emerging occupational trends. Currently, it is being used by the new National Geospatial Technology Center (NGTC) to help identify a set of core competencies needed by technicians in the geospatial industry.
