Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Renewable Energy, Agriscience: Growing GIS across Curriculums
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Robert Welch

Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan, offers a two-year associates degree program in GIS and Geospatial Technologies. The program started in 1986 and is the oldest operating program in the United States. The GIS program and others in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Alternative and Renewable Energy and Precision Agriculture have moved into a state-of-the-art technology center with space to grow and curriculum integration is the key. The integration of geo-spatial technologies into an array of related programs can create a broader and stronger demand for courses in your GIS program. The use of graphics and maps and the analysis of landscape sites can stimulate the use of GIS as a tool in project development. The site mapping of wind turbines in the Alternative Energy Program can be enhanced with the use of GIS technologies. Presentation skills which are critical across all of these curriculums can be energized and mobilized with GIS.
