Leveraging Technology in the Classroom: Organization, Delivery, and Grading.
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Indy Hurt

This talk addresses issues of content delivery and grading using course management systems, in-class electronic polling devices, and online community environments.

Popular GIS courses often offer multiple lab sessions for students to choose from. Unintended differences in sessions are driven by a number of factors ranging from teaching assistant background in the subject matter to technical issues that may arise. Online community environments can be leveraged to communicate relevant information across multiple lab sessions while electronic polling devices contribute to an active learning environment.

The nature of the evaluation instrument must be carefully crafted to convey clear expectations while minimizing ambiguity. Students require structure yet a balanced approach must be implemented with efforts to minimize the risk of stifling student creativity. The balanced approach highlighted in this talk was designed to provide specific learning objectives for students while generating standardized content for teaching assistants to grade consistently across sessions.
