Spatial Data Infrastructure Implications for Educational Leadership
Track: GIS for Administration, Planning and Policy
Author(s): Benjamin Branch

The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of policy makers and educators towards spatial thinking concepts. As such, its results generated a theory of proposed experiences for pragmatic educational leadership and policy study consideration.

An overarching consideration was that the data driven decision tool of spatial thinking, such as, GIS was found to be the chosen tool of the federal government via the 1994 Executive Order 12906, known as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure Act, a federal mandate. In congruence, it was stated that the use of GIS or “spatial thinking can be learned, and it can and should be taught at all levels in the education system” (National Academy of Sciences, 2005, p. 22). The ambition of this research effort was to identify a set of possible experiences that could augment compliance and educational pipeline issues that may involve of spatial thinking.
