Developing a Curriculum: Occupational Analysis for Geospatial Technology
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Christopher Semerjian, Mike Rudibaugh

During its first year of operation the National Geospatial Technology Center (geotechcenter.org) was tasked with conducting two DACUM analyses focused on geospatial technologies. DACUM is an acronym for Developing a Curriculum. It is an occupational analysis method designed to identify core tasks that may be immediately applied to the development of training curricula. One DACUM was conducted in a rural region (Mattoon, Illinois) and one in an urban region (Atlanta, Georgia). Each workshop involved a trained DACUM facilitator and a committee of 12 expert workers from the geospatial industry who outlined duties, tasks, knowledge, skills, behaviors, tools, equipment, trends and concerns as it relates to their jobs. This session discusses the need for geospatial DACUMs, an outline of the DACUM process, an overview of the DACUM results, comparisons to prior geospatial DACUMs, and strategies for integration with other efforts to establish core competencies in GIS.
