AbstractCore Competencies for GIS Professionals: Approaching Synthesis and Consensus Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education Author(s): David DiBiase, Daniel Ferstenberg Is there a 'GIS Profession'? If so (as considerable evidence suggests), then there ought to be a set of core competencies that all GIS professionals possess (or ought to possess), regardless of their particular job descriptions. No widely-accepted list of GIS core competencies exists in the U.S., however, despite several previous national-scale efforts. This session proposes an approach that synthesizes earlier results, including DACUM task analyses conducted at member institutions of the National Geospatial Technology Center (geotechcenter.org). Collaborating institutions include the GIS Certification Institute (gisci.org), which has formed a Working Group on Professional Competencies. Session participants will have an opportunity to critique a preliminary draft of proposed GIS Core Competencies.
