Recruiting Students into GIS Classes: What Works for Us
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Ken Yanow

GIS is an enabling technology and can be used in any 'spatial' discipline as a visual and analytical tool. Nevertheless, one of the ironic barriers to the success of many GIS courses and programs is lack of enrollment. At Southwestern College we have designed a multi-tiered recruitment strategy which includes 1) imbedding GIS within disciplines across the campus, 2) offering GIS courses that fulfill Associate degree and transfer general education requirements, and 3) are ultimately accessible to the most students (i.e. short session and online). Course enrollment in our Introductory GIS class has never been less than 100% (class max of 30 students).
