Teaching with GIS: Creating Innovative and Interactive K12 Learning Environments
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Eileen Goff

San Diego Mesa College is the recipient of two California SB-70 “Community Collaborative” grants. The grants focus on collaborative efforts between Mesa College faculty, K12 educators, and industry professionals to build innovative and interactive geospatial learning modules for the classroom. Teachers attend hands-on workshops to learn about geospatial tools and how these can be applied in the K12 classroom. The learning modules incorporate geospatial technologies to design spatial awareness, visualization, and problem-solving teaching lessons. This interactive learning environment engages students and also promotes skills in geospatial fields with promising and growing career potential. Geospatial technology educator training focuses on four primary subject matter areas: Environmental Science, Information Technology, Energy, and Public Services. Working closely with K12 educator partners, Mesa College staff is developing the learning modules for testing and adoption in the classroom in the fall of 2009. Ultimately these modules may be replicated across other school districts in California.
