Abstract

A GIS Degree That Merges GIS with Surveying
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): John Ritter, Evelyn Kalb, Jack Walker, Mason Marker

The Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) is now offering a four-year B.S. degree in Geomatics/GIS Option. Students within the Geomatics Department now have the choice of selecting either a Surveying or GIS option for their degree. Students within the GIS option retain a significant fraction of the surveying curriculum while simultaneously building a strong foundation in GIS. The Geomatics Department at OIT is the only ABET accredited professional surveying degree program in Oregon and Washington. As such, students within the GIS option now have the opportunity to blend strong, traditional surveying skills with GIS. The GIS curriculum for the degree incorporates a mature sequence of GIS courses since OIT has been offering undergraduate GIS courses from the mid 90's in terms of individual courses and subsequently as a GIS Minor.

This presentation outlines the GIS degree program at OIT in terms of its current program curriculum and vision.
