Web-Based Geospatial Technologies for Supporting Student Citizen Science
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Sean O'Connor

National Geographic presents FieldScope, a web-based geospatial tool designed to support citizen science and geographic investigations in the classroom. FieldScope uses the Esri Flex API in combination with ArcGIS Online Services, ArcGIS Server 9.3, and other web services.

Beyond bringing geospatial technology into the classroom, FieldScope enables students and classrooms to upload data—including field measurement data, notes, and observational media—and to see them in relation to data from peers and professional scientists. The community and tools designed around FieldScope foster collaborative sharing and analysis of data amongst fellow citizen scientists.

National Geographic is working with partners in the Chesapeake Bay region to develop and pilot the tool and related educational materials throughout classrooms in the watershed. An end goal of the project is to develop a technology infrastructure and a model for citizen science that can be generalized to any geographic area and any investigation of spatially distributed phenomena.
