Abstract

Conservation of Water for Farm Land
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Trent Saracini

A group of Harrisburg EAST students wanted to do a GIS project, but didn't know where to start. One of the students knew a local farmer who had started a new form of water conservation dealing with zero land leveling. The students worked with the farmer and the county conservation office to research their project. The students used handheld GPS equipment and Esri software to complete the project. The major obstacle for them was showing the wells being drilled from an undergound perspective. The county we live in is one of the largest water consumers in the state. Ten years ago, according to some of the local farmers, you could drive 60 to 80 feet and hit water. Compared to now, when you have to drill 160 to 180 feet to find water. The students found this very alarming and wanted to highlight the farmers system for water conservation.
