Designing Lessons for English Language Learners
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Jesse Wright

This presentation shows how concepts and techniques from Aida Walqui, Jim Cummins and Steve Krashen can be implemented successfully in an introductory GIS course. Insights will be shared for the application of modeling concepts, bridging old knowledge with new knowledge, contextualizing theories to bring them to life, building schema, developing metacognition and assisting students in re-presentig their text. Lesson design and specific strategies will be discussed. Tips for creating vocabulary word banks and study guides to popular textbooks, such as Paul Bolstad's GIS Fundamentals and Keith Clarke's Getting Started with GIS will be covered. Materials and methods used in a college articulated southern California classroom will be shared. This presentation is about making GIS courses more accessible to students who are learning English.
