Abstract

Engaging Youth in Community Projects Using GIS
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Thomas Ray, Sarah Cofer

The US Department of Labor has identified nanotechnology,

biotechnology and geographic information systems as the top three

'emerging' fields. Thomas Ray and Sarah Cofer will describe how they implement, teach and coordinate youth led GIS projects within their communities and abroad.

They will discuss the use of volunteers in implementing the project, the youth teaching gis skills, as well as the importance of community partnerships. Projects include in school and after school community projects.

Resources for beginning projects as well as resources for locating community partners will also be discussed.
