Statewide GIS Training for K12 Teachers in Hawaii
Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Diana Warren

The Maui Economic Development Board Women in Technology Project launched a statewide initiative in 2008 called “GIS for Hawaii Educators.” They offered five separate two-day workshops titled Introduction to GIS with ArcExplorer (AEJEE) July through September 2008 on Maui, Molokai, Kauai, Hawaii, and Oahu. Teachers received stipends and jump drives with Hawaii data for attending, and tech coordinators and teachers who teamed up received additional stipends. Each workshop engaged teachers in project-based learning activities in AEJEE, a short GPS activity outside, and an opportunity to transfer GPS data to AEJEE. Teachers met GIS Using Professionals from their own island communities to learn about GIS Career Pathways in Hawaii. Pre-assessment data and workshop evaluation data show the value of this type of professional development, the need for more school site tech support, and the desire for content-area specific GIS workshops. Teachers all continue to receive online support via email and blog.
