Abstract

The GITTA Project
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Samuel Wiesmann, Monika Niederhuber, Thomas Grossmann

The use of Geographic Information Systems by a wide variety of stakeholders in manifold domains provokes the necessity of training highly educated experts. Hence, educators need to communicate three elementary aspects: fundamentals, practical expertise, and the awareness of change in a rapidly changing discipline.

The GITTA project (Geographic Information Technology Training Alliance) fuses the specialized knowledge of the most important GIS related teaching institutions in Switzerland. Integrating some of the over 40 theory lessons and practical case studies into conventional teaching opens the opportunity to better concentrate on practical skills (e.g. exploiting the features of ArcGIS) and on discussing current trends in GIS and GIScience evolution. The GITTA Association offers open access to its pool of e-learning content and the possibility to join and become an active author in the GITTA network. The project has been awarded at MedidaPrix 2008.
